During the sixties, Sara studied at Farnham School of Art and then sculpture at The Slade School of Art, exhibiting with The Young Contemporaries in 1968. She won a scholarship to La Jolla, San Diego in 1969, but instead travelled extensively throughout the Middle East, Morocco, America and Canada before settling down to marriage, two children and building a carpet repair business on the Welsh borders. During this time she drew and made cartoon sketches, and, in her 40’s started making wire sculpture, using hammered, heated and braised wire. In the mid-nineties, she began to make more solid forms with tin and steel, then after a brief period at Hereford Technical college, Sara began using a plasma cutter, making the cutting of flat sheet and the altering of solid welded forms like cutting butter with a knife.
I describe my work as sketches in steel. The work is all figurative and is welded steel. I love balance and movement. In the past subjects have included dancers, acrobats and athletes; some of my latest work is of flight. I love the romance of classical mythological stories and have made two sculptures of Icarus. Lately I have been using a marriage of welding, mesh, and I am currently working on some “Cherub” sculptures.
