Kate is a Herefordshire-based Land Artist making earthwork drawings.
The earthwork drawings are temporary, site-specific works made in direct response to the rhythms and patterns of the materials used and the land they are created within. Natural, indigenous materials are used to make the earthwork drawings that are not preconceived but emerge in the moment of their making following the flow and energy of their environment.
The Earthwork Drawing at Newport House will be sited in the meadow and will be drawn in response to the trees, lake and natural environment that surrounds it. The work will evolve over the duration of its making to form a spontaneous organic pattern sensed from the land and materials. The materials will be sourced from the woodland on the estate, using the chopped oak from the woodshed (which will be used later for fuel in the house). Visitors are invited to view the work being made at the show’s opening.
Statement
I make earthwork drawings in the land using found, natural materials. These temporary drawings are site-specific and follow the pattern of the land. The pieces are not preconceived except for location and materials, the design of the drawing emerges as it’s made at that particular moment in time and in response to the surroundings and the energy of the land.
