Jean Patrice was born in 1953 in Grasse, France. In 1989 he moved to an old farmhouse facing the Pyrenees, with plenty of space for his work and family. Wood is his main material.
His recent non-figurative work can give us the impression of something that already existed, something that we might have seen or come across before. A closer look reveals rhythms, compositions, chiselled lines, passages of light, going hand in hand with the natural patterns of the wood.
Statement
Observing trees in their entirety can provide us with a suggestion of our own evolution. The conjured image is totally different, and far removed, from any that animals might inspire. Such a comparison invites us to another understanding of human nature, particularly if we consider trees as highly evolved entities.
