James Connolly is a sculptor who has lived in the Cotswolds for over twenty five years, drawn there by the rich limestone of the area - where inspired by the direct carving school of Constantin Brancusi, he began to develop his own individual style of sculpting, in which he seeks to harmonise the human figure into its essential blocks of form and interlocking shapes.
Statement
My labour as a stone sculptor is to take each fresh block of unplumbed, secretive stone, and working only with simple tools - mallet and chisels - to seek the shape hidden within the uncarved block, and with tender blows, release it to the light. . .
