Caitriona Cartwright has been carving stone for 30 years. She trained as a stonemason at Weymouth College and then went on to work at Salisbury Cathedral on the repair of the spire.
Caitriona moved to the Welsh borders in 1991 and turned her hand to lettering and carving. She carves memorials, as well as standing stones, benches and bowls for the garden. She has been a member of craft co-operative The Hay Makers in Hay-on-Wye since 1997.
Statement
My work combines my love of stone in all its various forms with my love of words and letter forms. I carve indigenous stone, the more local the better. I love to go to local quarries to seek out interesting pieces of stone to make standing stones, birdbaths from boulders, hollowed out and lettered, bowls, benches, word pebbles, bookends and paperweights as well as headstones and memorials.
