Antonia Spowers is an Associate Member of the Royal Society of British Sculptors and a member of the Welsh Group, the 56 Group, Sculpture Cymru and Sculpture-Network. She is represented by jaggedart, London and commissioned by the Cass Foundation, Goodwood. Last year work was bought by Elgee Park Sculpture near Melbourne. Recent exhibitions in the UK include A Show of Hands at the Mid Wales Arts Centre, Caersws, and Sculpture Cymru at the National Botanic Garden of Wales. Antonia has been awarded numerous grants and bursaries. She combines a busy exhibition schedule with commissions and residencies in the UK and in an International Sculpture Park in Lithuania . The residencies have combined work with schools, local communities and environmental trust volunteers. The work has an environmental and sustainable emphasis, focussing on re-cycled and re-usable materials combined with new technologies.
I am interested in materials, either singly or in combination and their ability to express ideas. For some years the work focussed on water, its structure, behaviour, altered states and multiple associations. There is an ongoing reference to landscape, whether natural or man-made and ideas of continuity and connection. But recently the work tends to explore themes of disconnection and displacement.
I moved from London nineteen yearsago and until recently lived on the edge of the Black Mountains in Wales. I am currently living near Hay-on-Wye and plan to build.
